The Ferrari 488 continuing the 8-cylinder history replaced Ferrari’s previous mid-engine V8 berlinetta, the Ferrari 458. But unlike the 458 Italia, which had a naturally aspirated V8 engine, the 488GTB is powered by a twin turbo charged V8 engine. This is only the second time that Ferrari has introduced a turbocharged a mid-engine supercar; the first was the brilliant Ferrari F40. Ferrari offers the 488 in both coupe form (488 GTB) and convertible form (488 Spider).

Exterior Design

The car was designed not only to look absolutely groundbreaking but also to cut through air in the most efficient way possible. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the 488 features very sculptural signature air intake scallop that is a nod to the original 308 GTB that is divided into two sections by a splitter. The front is characterized by the dual grille opening which channels air into the two radiators. There is also a double front spoiler for which remind you of the F1 single-seaters. At the centre two pylons are combined with a deflector which channels air towards the flat underbody. The bonnet has pronounced, raised central section and two side channels, which channels the air from the two vents in the bumper. The blown spoiler and the large air vents, which help improve the car’s aerodynamics, dominate the tail. The new exhaust tailpipes have been repositioned to accommodate the greater height required for the diffuser which has an aggressive ramp angle.

The 488 Spider comes with the RHT (Retractable Hard Top), not the usual soft top giving better protection from noise and the elements. The Retractable Hard Top (RHT) unfolds and retracts in a record 14 seconds. It is also very light thanks to the use of aluminium and an extremely simple mechanism. The result is a saving of approximately 40 kg on a traditional hardtop solution and around 25 kg on a soft-top. In addition, the Ferrari 488 Spider also features a glass electric rear window, which can be adjusted to any of three positions regardless of whether the roof is up or down. This ensures superb in-cabin comfort even at high speeds when the top is dropped.

The Ferrari 488 GTB's cabin was designed to exude extreme sportiness without sacrificing occupant comfort. The cabin is an improved version of the 458’s cabin. It is more of an evolution than a complete redesign if the cabin. The 488 GTB also boasts a new Sport infotainment system with the display, which is part of the instrument cluster in the driver's line of. The shape of the V8’s intake plenums inspired the Ferrari 488 GTB’s new key and features keyless start. The key incorporates a chip which communicates wirelessly with the car's ECU, allowing the car to be started or turned off simply by pressing the "Start/Stop Engine" button on the steering wheel with the key is still in the driver's pocket or in the special storage area on the tunnel.

The V8 engine sported by the Ferrari 488 GTB is the Maranello engineers' latest response to the challenge to constantly set new benchmarks of excellence. This 3902 cc power unit is the Prancing Horse's most high performance engine delivering 670 CV at 8,000 rpm with a specific power output of 172 cv/l and a maximum torque of 760 Nm. The 488 GTB accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds flat and from 0-200 km/h in just 8.3.

The 488 GTB is priced at Rs3.88 Crore ex-showroom at the launch.
