SsangYong Motor Company is a South Korea based automobile manufacturing company. In Korean it means Double Dragons Motor Vehicles. Mahindra & Mahindra Limited currently owns SsangYong Motor Company.
In 2010, Mahindra & Mahindra Limited an Indian company was named the preferred bidder, and in February 2011, it acquired 70% share of SsangYong. South Korea's free Trade Commission approved Mahindra's acquisition of SsangYong.
SsangYong came into existence by the merger of two companies in 1963. Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop (established in 1954) and Dongbang Motor Co (established in 1962) led to the new merged company known as Ha Dong-hwan Motor Co. In 1964, the Company started building Jeeps for the US Army as well as trucks and buses. In 1976 they started building a variety of special purpose vehicles. In 1977 its name got changed to Dong-A Motor.
It was 1986 when SsangYong Business Group took over Dong-A Motor and renamed it to SsangYong Motor. In 1991, SsangYong commenced a technology partnership with Daimler-Benz to develop an SUV with Mercedes-Benz technology.
In 2016 in India SsangYong Motors sells its mid-size SUV Rexton - with variants RX5. RX6 and RX7.
