Mitsubishi Motors Corporation origin date back to 1917, when the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. introduced the Mitsubishi Model A, Japan's first series-production automobile. It was an entirely hand-built seven-seater sedan, but was discontinued later in 1921 as it was proving to be expensive to manufacture. Only 22 units were built.
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) was formed in 1970. In 1977 Mitsubishi Galant got the "Car of the Year' honour in South Africa. In 1979 Mitsubishi L200 got the "USA's Pick-up of the Year". The shotgun became a global best seller, winning "4x4 of the Year" awards in Britain, France, Australia, Spain and West Germany. In 1990 MMC introduced the world's first Traction Control System (TCS), followed by Super Select 4WD and Multi-mode ABS in 1991 and INVECS in 1992.
In 1998, a technical collaboration between the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Japan and Hindustan Motors Limited ensured with the formation of "The Chennai Car Plant". Since April 2014, Hindustan Motor Finance Corporation Ltd. (HMFCL) operates as an independent company who manufactures and markets the "Mitsubishi" brand products in India.
