Tata Motors Limited formerly known as TELCO, short for Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company is an Indian multinational automotive manufacturing company. Tata Motors Limited is a subsidiary of the Tata Group and has its headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
Tata Motors is a part of the USD 100 billion Tata group founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868. Tata Motors logo went international in 1961 and sells vehicles in more than 50 countries across the world.
Tata Motors entered into the commercial vehicle sector in 1954 after forming a joint venture with Daimler-Benz of Germany.
In 1991 Tata Motors entered the passenger vehicle market with the launch of the MUV, Tata Siera. Tata Motors launched the Tata Indica in 1998, the first fully indigenous Indian passenger car.
In 2004, Tata Motors acquired Daewoo's South Korea-based truck manufacturing unit, Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company, later renamed Tata Daewoo. On 27 September 2004 Tata Motors got listed at the New York Stock Exchange. In 2005, Tata Motors acquired 21% controlling stake in the Spanish bus and coach manufacturer Hispano Carrocera.
Tata motors shocked the world in 2008 by the launch of world's cheapest car the Tata Nano. In 2008, Tata Motors acquired the British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover, manufacturer of the Jaguar, Land Rover and Daimler luxury car brands, from the Ford Motor Company. Tata Motors acquired the full ownership of Hispano Carrocera in 2009. In 2015 Tata Motors unveiled the Hexa six-seater crossover concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, likely to be launched in Indian Market in 2016.
Tata Motors Cars is a division of Tata Motors, which produces passenger cars under the Tata Motors marque.
